Lacombe is a small city located in central AB. The FIRST STEP Center is an AB ED accredited private High School for adults, providing HIGH SCHOOL, ABE (Adult Basic Education), ESL (Prep for IELTS or TOEFL), ATP (Academic Trades Prep) and Education services within an area of about a 100 km. radius.
The Center is located on the main level of a strip mall in down town Lacombe. About 3000 sq. ft. is comprised of office, administration, and learning space. Two classrooms are used for lectures and/or group testing as needed. A large open area furnished with KIOSKs and computers, is set up for independent learning. The center is wheel chair accessible with one wheel chair accessible bathroom.
One glassed-in office space is used for one-on-one tutoring/assessment or computer-based testing. This is the space most often used for proctoring exams. Examinees surrender all cell phones, IPODS, backpacks, purses etc. and are provided with a school calculator if necessary. They are seated where they can be observed through a glass window.
One staff member is assigned to check on the student on a regular basis and monitor the time. If we are invigilating more than one exam, one of the classrooms will be used and monitored by a staff person seated in the room.

NOTE RE: COURSE CHALLENGE and Final Exams.
Course challenge is a provision that allows any senior high school student to challenge the outcomes of a course by participating in a formal assessment (examination) rather than taking the course. Students must attain at least 50% in order to receive High School credits in grades ten and eleven core courses. Course challenge in grade twelve diploma examination courses applies only to the school-awarded mark component of the course, and therefore will NOT result in a final course mark until after the student successfully completes the diploma examination for that course.
If a Student has not registered and/or received instruction in a course, and wishes to write a final exam for the purposes of attaining High School credits, the cost will be $100.00.
